Book Rock
There were many significant differences from the film and the book of The Lord of the Flies. First difference was the boys. Secondly, the “beast” in the book and the film was different and lastly, the film contained an adult and some technology.
The most significant difference from the film and the book was the fact that the boys were from different background. The boys from the book were British and catholic. On the other hand, the boys in the film were Americans and they were in cadets. Since the boys were from the military sort of organization, they were given ranks. Ralph was chosen as the “leader” because he had the highest rank out of all the other boys. This made a lot of differences from film to the book because the boys did not vote to choose the “leader”. What's more, Jack did not even argue when he was not picked. He just complied as if not being the leader bothered him. However, in the book, the boys were from a Christian school and some of the boys were from the choir group. When people think about this, the choir boys are the one who are modest and have the quintessence of pureness. It is shocking to see how these Christian boys change and reading how the choir boys change so much. While on the film, the boys changing into some savages were not too shocking.
The second significant difference was the Beast. In the book, the boys thought that there was a beast in the island. The feeling of the unknown scared the boys. When they boys arrived at the island, one of the boys said that the beast was from the sea. When the others heard that, the rest of the boys were in alert and were scared because the feelings of the sea. Sea is filled with mystery and darkness. The sea also reflects oneself. The Beast coming from the sea is suitable because the beast represents the darkness of the humankind and that darkness was being reflected from the sea. The film does not state that the beast is from the sea and this erases some of the important meanings that were on the book.
Another major difference was the adult and technology. In the book, the boys were stranded on the island without any adults. While in the book, the pilot was saved along with the boys and the very presence of an adult changes several things. The pilot and the technology connected the boys to the outside world. The boys had the glow stick and the raft to use while on the island. The glow stick helped the boys calm down because the glow stick lighted the way especially in the cave. Also, Simon had a dream where the pilot tells the boys that they would be rescued while in the book, Simon dreamt of the boys getting rescued.
Some of differences between the novel and the film made some major changes. The differences were very noticeable because the boys and the beast were different and the addition of an adult and technology were some of the major differences. The book was way better than the novel.
